Randall
Randall McNeil (April 2, 1970 – July 31, 2024)
Randall was a seminal British DJ and record producer who played a pivotal role in the evolution of jungle and drum and bass music.
Randall's journey into music began in the late 1980s when a college friend introduced him to DJing.
His passion was ignited at the 1987 Notting Hill Carnival, where he first encountered acid house music.
This experience led him to immerse himself in the burgeoning rave scene, drawing inspiration from influential figures like Rhythm Doctor and Mr. C.
Randall's natural talent for mixing quickly set him apart.
He gained early recognition at 'Delirium' warehouse parties in Stratford, East London, and secured a spot on the pirate radio station Centreforce in 1989.
A defining moment in his career came when he delivered an impromptu three-hour set at the 'Living Dream' rave in Leyton, filling in for a missing DJ. This performance solidified his reputation and led to a Saturday night residency at 'Orange' at the Rocket Club in London, where he played alongside prominent DJs such as DJ Hype, Grooverider, and Fabio.
Renowned for his impeccable mixing skills and innovative techniques, Randall was often hailed as "the DJ's DJ."
He was instrumental in pioneering the double drop technique, where two tracks are played simultaneously to align their climactic points.
His sets at iconic clubs like AWOL, The Edge, Dreamscape, and Helter Skelter are legendary, inspiring a generation of DJs, including Andy C and Friction.
Beyond DJing, Randall co-owned the De Underground record shop and label in Forest Gate, East London, alongside Cool Hand Flex and Mike De Underground. This establishment was instrumental in releasing seminal tracks like "We Are I.E." by Lennie De Ice, which is often credited as one of the first jungle tracks.
In 1994, Randall collaborated with Andy C and Ant Miles to produce "Sound Control," an early release on the fledgling Ram Records.
DJ Randall's untimely passing on July 31, 2024, at the age of 54, was a significant loss to the music community.
His legacy continues to influence and inspire artists and fans worldwide, cementing his status as a foundational figure in the jungle and drum and bass genres.
